It’s that time again! Pinterest Challenge time! And this month, I thought you might like to add a little spice with a Valentine door tote Pinterest Challenge!

ADD A LITTLE SPICE WITH A VALENTINE DOOR TOTE PINTEREST CHALLENGE

This month’s Pinterest Challenge is all about Valentine’s Day door and wall decor.

If you are visiting here from Lora B. at Create and Ponder, welcome! Lora’s unique ‘twist’ (see what I did there?) on this challenge is super unique and lovely.

Whether you love lots of red-pink-and-white or you prefer a bit of understated decor for the holiday (can you see me raising my hand?), you’re sure to find something from me and 16 of my blogging buddies. Be sure to visit each blogger at the end of this post!

What is the Pinterest Challenge?

For those of you that are new here, the Pinterest Challenge is a monthly post collection hosted by my dear friend Cindy from County Road 407. Cindy is an awesome host!

Cindy chooses one inspirational photo and bunches of my blogging friends get together and put our own spin on the image. Super fun, and it makes for LOTS of ideas for y’all!

Valentine Door Tote Pinterest Challenge Inspiration

This months inspiration comes from Sky at Capital B blog.

Her quick and easy Valentine Heart Wreath was a catalyst for my Valentine door tote!

Something you may not know about me, I don’t go all out for Valentine’s. I think the most ‘heart’ decor I’ve done at My Wee Abode was my Valentine kitchen, a ticking fabric heart wreath (yep, I DID create a wreath in the shape of heart!), and my velvet heart wood bead garland.

What can I say… Though I didn’t use a heart wreath for my ‘twist’, the heart shape, seasonal pinks, and the heart die cuts were the inspiration for my understated Valentine’s door tote decor.

And, mine is not quite as simple, however, it only took about 15 minutes to put together. Take a look!

What You’ll Need

This door tote can either be filled with flowers (faux or fresh, just use a mason jar with water inside), or you can add just a few on the side to make it look like you just picked some on a morning walk.

  • Woven tote (I picked mine up at a yard sale for $1… yep, one dollar! But, I’ve used it so often, you may want to splurge a little and use it more often for other seasons. Oh, and check eBay for ‘straw totes’!)
  • Silk florals… again, I splurged a little, but I will use these over and over again. I also went with some peachy-pink tones and white, like this rose sprig, white lilac, white hydrangea, and some ‘berries’. I purchased mine from a local design center, so I’m sharing some that are ‘close’ to what I used.
  • Corrugated Heart Picks from Hobby Lobby (run to the store, now!)
  • Mini Wood Hearts (why are you still sitting there? I said RUN to Hobby Lobby now! 😉 )
  • Floral foam (just buy it in bulk… you’ll always have it available that way)

So, I have to admit… these supplies are not the easiest to find on the cheap. But all of these are items you will us over and over in your decor. I’m sure you’ll see them pop up at My Wee Abode again!

How to Create a Valentine Door Tote Wreath

This is so simple, I’m just going to tell your real quick what to do.

Add your floral foam to the bottom of your tote.

Then add your faux floral stems by following the numbers in the photo! 😉 (It’s kind of a messy way to do it, but I’ve still got Tuesday Turn About to write, people!)

  1. Add your hydrangeas, one on either side, and then one in the middle.
  2. Place your rose spray to the left, and separate and bend to spread a little on the left side (the bud is up at the top behind the hanger… I’ll show you more in just a second.)
  3. Add just one stem of white lilac or stock.
  4. Some height and texture is added with the berries on the right. Again, this is one spray that I bent and spread to look like more.
  5. Add your heart element. The original metal heart picks were red, and I repainted them to match my understated tones and added a little white glitter for just a touch of sparkle.
  6. You may want a little more heart element, like stringing these wooden hearts and hanging them on the handle of the tote (again these are painted to match with my favorite ColorShot acrylics, exclusively sold at Home Depot).

And that’s it!

Add a Little Spice with a Valentine Door Tote

Funny… I didn’t end up photographing my Valentine door decor on my outside door (which will be it’s regular ‘home’). We finally have some rain this week and it was too wet to take pictures outside.

So the next best place is in my tiny entryway.

The aqua coat rack actually looks kinda nice with the peachy-pink floral tones.

This sweet little tote will easily transition into spring by taking out the heart accents!

If you spend a bit on faux flowers, it’s sometimes hard to tell if they are fresh or fake! 😉

Even this white stem (is it lilac or stock?) looks real this close-up (at least it does to me!)

This string of hearts was easy to make by simply dry-brushing the hearts with my ColorShot acrylic craft paints.

And these hearts were easy to repaint from their bright red color, too.

And there’s that sweet little rose bud looking down at her garden of floral friends!

Using a tote to replace a wreath on a door always ends up looking so fresh and pretty. It’s one of my favorite ways to decorate a door.

Have you ever use a tote as a door ‘wreath’ or wall hanging? Will you try it now? 😉

Now it’s time to hop on over to my dear friend and Tuesday Turn About cohort, Michelle at Thistle Key Lane. Michelle’s decor never disappoints, and she is putting a French country spin on her Pinterest Challenge!

Then be sure to take a peek at all my friends posts for more Valentine decor that can transition in to spring!
